2014 WTHBA Homes for Heroes Recipient

Kelsey Taylor and her children accepted the keys to their new home in Southwest Lubbock in 2014. Built through the West Texas Homebuilders Association and Lubbock Homes for Heroes project, the homestead is dedicated to the late U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Houston Taylor. The Iraq and Afghanistan veteran was killed Oct. 13, 2011.

“We’re here to honor a combat soldier who gave all,” said Lt. Gen. Bernard Mittemeyer in his keynote speech at the key-presentation ceremony. The retired soldier also presented a neatly folded American flag in Taylor’s honor.

“What does our flag mean?” he said. “Our flag is the symbol of freedom. It’s the symbol of our nation. It should remind us of Houston and others who died for this nation.”

“I don’t know what to say to thank everybody,” Kelsey said while trying to hold back her tears. “It’s not possible to thank everybody, but we’re very excited and very grateful and we appreciate all the time to do this. It means more than most people would think.”

Kelsey will enjoy living in the gifted home with her two children, Rylan and Avery.
